Many users may be surprised to discover that Microsoft OneNote is already included in Microsoft Office packages that they own. Thus, one of the major advantages of this program is the convenience of not having to buy an additional expensive OCR tool. OneNote contains many features for working with images and text, including OCR. The OCR function in OneNote cannot compete with more advanced tools that are designed specifically for OCR, but it is good to have on hand for basic OCR tasks.
MS OneNote is limited to recognizing basic fonts, and poor image quality immediately affects the accuracy of the OCR. Thus, when using this software, you are fairly restricted in the types of documents that you can process. Another limitation of OneNote is formatting: it cannot work with complex page layouts. Therefore, you cannot rely on this program as an all-inclusive OCR tool for frequent use. While it is easy to master, it leaves some documents inaccessible, so you should probably go with a different OCR program for frequent professional use. With that said, if all you need is a very basic OCR feature for some simple documents, OneNote might be the right option.
